I know Halloween is long gone and we’re officially on the final countdown to Christmas, but this week I haven’t been very festive. Instead I’ve been watching American Horror Story: The Asylum, which has got me thinking about hauntings and sinister locations and how a creepy or atmospheric image can convey a whole story without words.
Photography is a great source of inspiration for a ghost story. A couple of weeks ago, Rock ‘n’ Roll Bride featured an unusual bridal shoot that took place in an abandoned American penitentiary. The model’s vintage dress gives her an ethereal quality and combined with the desolate location, actually evokes a very ghostly feel.
Horror stories and fairytales are closely tied together. This week I came across a blog post featuring an amazing collection of photographs depicting eerie, enchanted forests like those described by the Brothers Grimm. I could feel my imagination running away with me just looking at some of the pictures!

I really want to write a ghost story now!
