Are you one of those girls who love playing dress up, putting on a gorgeous frock and a generous layer of your boldest red lipstick?
Do you secretly enjoy striking a pose in front of the mirror?
Would you love to have some photographs of you looking at your most stunning but worry about how you’ll look in front of the camera?
This weekend I went way out of my comfort zone. I headed up to Newcastle to meet Laura from Pearman Photography at her studio in the city centre for a Valentine’s 1940s pin-up styled shoot.
It’s Laura’s mission in life to do something innovative with her portrait photography, to create images that are both sexy and fun. As she says:
“I’m actually a real live feminist! Although many a feminist would argue that even whispering the words ‘pin’ and ‘up’ sends a cat amongst the pigeons (whole groups strangely see the objectification of woman as “empowering” whilst others see it as simply OBJECTification). I’m just asking all of the women who are actually feminists (but say they aren’t because media and the world has told them it’s a bad thing to be)… to muse on this.”
The photo shoot starts with a spot of pampering; I had my hair and make-up done by the gorgeous ladies from ND Make Up who transformed me from grungy girl next door to a glamorous 1940s poster girl.
I’m not a natural in front of the camera. Whenever someone points a lens in my direction I grimace like Chandler from Friends, in the episode when he and Monica have their engagement pictures taken. I’ve never been very confident about my appearance and come over all self-conscious when there’s a camera involved. I can never quite work out what to do with my face!
But with my big hair and bright make-up I was soon posing away having great fun as Laura snapped photos and repeated her mantra of, “smile, shocked, pruuuune.” (Apparently if you say ‘prune’, your mouth takes on that perfect model pout!)
I was really nervous about seeing the pictures, but I can’t believe the end result! It barely look like me at all! So if you’d like to see more of Laura’s work, or find out how you can book your own pin-up shoot, check out her website, Facebook or Twitter pages.
