A couple of months ago I wrote about a Twitter dilemma I was having; I couldn’t decide whether to change the username on my existing account to match my blog, or set up a new profile.
As an experiment I set up a second account and have been running @AmyWritesStuff as my personal account and @tenpennydreams as my blog account.
Initially, I found it a bit of a chore to have two Twitter accounts. Starting over and building up a new following from scratch is pretty daunting.
But in my 9 to 5 life I work in social media, so I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks that I thought I would share.
- If you have more than one Twitter or Facebook account, don’t post identical content. Chances are you’re going to attract some of the same followers and if they see the same messages they’re going to get bored and switch off. If you need to post a link more than once, change the accompanying text.
- Link accounts on different profiles. I hooked up my Ten Penny Dreams Facebook page to my Twitter account so that whenever I post a status or a link on Facebook it is automatically tweeted too. This means that I still have content on Twitter, even if I’m not posting directly there.
- Sign up to a third party management platform like HootSuite. You can hook up accounts from various social networks and schedule your updates; you don’t even need to log in to social profiles. Websites like HootSuite also provide analytics tools so that you can see how effective your messages are.
- If you like to share other people’s content with your followers, check out Buffer. Download the app and drop in any interesting articles that you would like to share. Buffer will post them to your social media accounts throughout the day at optimum times.
- Don’t just follow the same people across each social network. Branch out and find some new and interesting contacts. That way you will see lots of different content and have something fresh to share on each network.
- Give added value by sharing different content on different networks. Your followers might connect with you again and again.
Bloggers are always told that they need to be on as many social networks as possible, especially the most popular ones. But in reality this can be incredibly time consuming.
I hope these tips give you some ideas on staying on top of your online life, but I’d love to know what else you would add to the list.
