Although we’re well into March now, winter’s icy fingers are still exerting their grip and the snow has been coming down heavily all day.
There’s something about snow that makes a part of us regress to childhood; snow means a break from the routine, a great excuse to stay home and have some spontaneous fun. Unfortunately, as you get older snow seems to become more of a pain than a joy; usually this coincides with learning to drive. Not really surprising when the slightest dusting of the white stuff and the transport network in Britain grinds to a halt!
I’m not lucky enough to be able to take a snow day, but the weather got me thinking about how lovely it would be to spend the day curled up on the sofa watching the snow fall outside.
Whether your school is shut, you can’t make it to the office or you’re simply fortunate enough to have no plans, what are the best ways to spend your unexpected snow day?
1. Read a book
Put on your comfiest clothes (or even stay in your PJs), pick up a book, curl up on the sofa and lose yourself in the story. Winter days are made for being cosy!
2. Light a fire
If you’re lucky enough to have a log fire, then snow is the perfect excuse to get a blaze going. There’s nothing like the crackling of the flames keeping you warm as the weather gets worse outside.
3. Go sledging
One of the best ways to enjoy a snow day; fish out your sledge, find a hill and have some fun. It’ll take you back to all the great times you had as a kid whenever it snowed.
4. Take photos
Snow creates endless possibilities for photo opportunities; whether you want to take tons of snaps of the kids or the dog playing, examine the way the light reflects off the pristine white landscape or simply document just how thick the snow is. So get the camera out and play around.
5. Curl up on the sofa in a sleeping bag and take control of the remote
Enough said really – get cosy and enjoy some lazy time!
6. Plan a holiday
If the snow makes you miserable and cold and you long for summer, spend the day online surfing travel websites and planning your next holiday. Pictures of beaches, sunshine and cocktails should put a smile back on your face!
7. Have a snowball fight, build a snowman and drink hot chocolate
Sometimes the best way to enjoy the snow is to get outside, get silly and enjoy yourself with friends. When you can’t stand the cold any more, you can enjoy coming back to a warm house and making a hot chocolate or running a bath. Heaven!
Sure, it’s almost spring, but it looks like there will be one last chance for some snow related fun before the week is out!

Last snow day we had, I got all the way to school (setting off early cos I’m good!) before they phoned me – then spent the rest of the day trying to get back home!

Would love a snow day, but got to go to work!
