Ever since I was at school, I’ve dreamed of visiting Iceland. It’s been so long now that I can’t actually remember the original reason for my obsession, but it has only grown as the years have passed by.
Well, this year I’ve finally taken the plunge and booked a trip. In a few short months my hubby and I will be packing up the camera and heading off to Reykjavik – so excited! I’ve already spent endless hours scouting places to visit and trips to make, although we’re only there for a long weekend.
One of the reasons I find Iceland so appealing is the drama of the landscape, which inspires people to refer to the country as the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’. From volcanoes to glaciers to geysers, Iceland is known for its strikingly beautiful scenery.
Since we booked our trip, I’ve been listening to Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men constantly. I think their album is going to be the soundtrack to the holiday!
Iceland is also home to one of my favourite mystery writers, Arnaldur Indridason, who is a must-read for anyone who loves Scandinavian crime fiction. His atmospheric stories capture the darker side of life on the island.
If you’re thinking about travelling to Iceland, or you’re wondering what there is to do there, let me suggest a few things that have caught my eye.
Blue Lagoon
One of Iceland’s best-known attractions, the Blue Lagoon is a unique geothermal spa close to Reykjavik where you can relax and swim in the stunning waters.
Gullfoss
A waterfall located in south western Iceland, whose name means ‘golden falls’. It is part of the Golden Circle tourist route, along with Thingvellir National Park and the geothermal geysers.
Hallgrímskirkja
A striking church in the centre of Reykjavik, which provides gorgeous views across the city from its observation deck.
Adventure tours
Iceland offers some really exciting day trips, including white water rafting, glacier walking, caving, whale watching and snowmobiling. Plus, if you visit at the right time of year you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
The Laundromat Café
Thanks to a link from blogger Lucy J Loves last week, I spotted this cute Reykjavik café that features a display of books around the counter. We might have to call in for a burger!
As part of my Icelandic dream I’ve been busy pinning as many gorgeous images as I can find – believe me, there are plenty. You can check out the board on Pinterest here.

I love traveling, and Iceland has always been one of my dream destinations. That’s so exciting that you’ve booked a trip there. Take lots of pictures and post them. I want to hear all about your trip when you return. Who knows? I might get inspired to book a trip to the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ also! Great post!
