Music has always been an important part of my writing process.
The right song can evoke the perfect mood, helping me to slip inside the story I’m trying to tell, to feel the emotions of the characters, or the feelings I want to create in the reader.
I have a writing playlist on my iPod that I listen to sometimes while I work, but more often, before I even sit down at the computer. That list of songs helps me to focus my mind on the story and shut out some of the other things happening around me.
It’s a fairly eclectic selection of music, with plenty of melancholy indie songs and a bit of classical thrown in. Currently, the most played songs are by artists like Radiohead, Daughter, London Grammar, Portishead, Emiliana Torrini and NO.
But sometimes the playlist becomes a little tired, after I’ve listened to it over and over again. When that happens I need to take a break and find some new songs to enjoy. It can be difficult to find the right kind of music. I often discover new artists through television or film: a particular song might strike me while I’m watching something and I’ll make a note to find out what it is, or grab my phone and use the Shazam app. I’m always looking for fresh inspiration.
So I was intrigued when Three Mobile got in touch to tell me about their new Family Sharing service on iOS8, which allows up to six users to share playlists or libraries of books and films with members of their family via iTunes.
Not only can I now hunt through family playlists for new music, but I can share e-books too.
Whether you’re preparing for NaNoWriMo or you just want something new to listen to, this could be a great way to expand your iTunes library.
Meanwhile I’m off to track down some more great songs to write to – I’d love to hear your recommendations!
