One of the best parts of taking a holiday can be finding the extra time to enjoy a good book.
But sometimes it’s difficult to choose the right reading material. I always get carried away and want to take a huge pile of books with me – not the most practical way to travel!
So how can you narrow down your selection?
Go big
If you’re heading off on a relaxing beach vacation where you’re planning to spend two weeks lying in the sun and sipping cocktails, chances are you’ll have a lot of time to read.
So take the opportunity to get started on that monster that’s been sitting on your shelf for ages. Just make sure it doesn’t nudge your suitcase over the weight allowance for your flight!
Go thrilling
There’s a reason that the summer reads lists tend to be full of the latest thrillers and page turners: people like to read something exciting and engaging while they’re on holiday. With so much time to read, stories that are quick to get through will only increase the number of books you can finish.
Go classic
Despite the best of intentions, classic novels aren’t always at the top of our reading list. We know that they might take a bit more work or focus than a modern novel, as the language is different and the story might be slower than we would like.
On the beach, there’s plenty of time to deal with a challenging read.
Go to the end
Maybe there’s a book you’ve been struggling to finish? You want to read it, but it just isn’t grabbing you. Maybe you put it down, intending to come back to it, and instead you’ve been reading other things.
Take it on holiday where distractions are at a minimum. Even better, put it in your hand luggage, without any other reading material. Chances are, you’ll be so bored on the plane that you’ll get back into it much more easily.
Go location specific
We’re off to Venice soon and I’m planning to download Thomas Mann’s classic Death in Venice, as it’s set in the same area we’re staying in.
Reading a story set in the place you’re travelling to can get you excited about the trip and it can deepen your sense of the country and its culture. It might even give you some new ideas on places to visit while you’re there.
Have you got your summer holiday reading list sorted yet?
