Deep in the Yorkshire Dales is a curious place full of mysterious pathways and hidden surprises…
The Forbidden Corner was built in the grounds of Tupgill Park Estate near the town of Middleham. Originally built by the owner as a private garden, it grew into a popular tourist attraction that amazes and delights children and grown-ups alike.
However, it has a controversial past, as the National Park Authority initially objected to the impact the attraction had on the surrounding environment and tried to close it down. It stayed open but tickets now have to be pre-booked so the site doesn’t get too busy.
The drive up is impressive enough, but enter the gardens and you can’t fail to be enchanted by the carefully crafted follies, statues and temples, complete with all kinds of curious creatures.
The gardens are a real maze of attractions and you spend hours wandering around exploring – and getting caught out by some of the motion activated water features! It’s easy to feel like Alice in Wonderland as you walk through narrow tunnels, past giant towering woodland sculptures.
We were amazed at how much effort and thought had obviously gone into making this place so special – not to mention how stunning the views are in the surrounding national park.
If you’re in the area, I dare you to venture into The Forbidden Corner…
