Achieving our goals is a very personal thing. We have to decide what we want from life and pursue it.
But sometimes that involves sacrifice.
I’m getting ready to move to a new job, one that I hope will bring lots of exciting things along with it. My current job isn’t perfect, but I’m incredibly sad to be leaving it behind, mostly for the fantastic team of people that I work with every day.
Leaving those people behind is hard, but I know I’m making the right decision for my future.
There are times in life when we all have to move on to something new and break ties with some of the people in our lives. It might be going off to university, travelling, moving away or starting a new career. We need to do those things for our own fulfilment, because they’re important to us, but often it means losing touch with friends.
We all have people who have been an important part of our lives at one time, who have drifted away over the years.
Maybe you make time for the occasional coffee, or to chat over Skype. Perhaps you keep up with each other’s lives on Facebook.
It’s sad to think of the people you’re no longer close to, the ones you wish you’d stayed in touch with. Life might be richer with them in it.
But life is also better for the opportunity to meet new people or visit new places, to try new things and work at something meaningful.
The people who grace our lives for a short time can change it immeasurably. Maybe it’s meant to be that way. Nothing has to be forever.
We’re all busy nowadays; we don’t always make the time or the effort to keep in touch. We mean to text that person and invite them out for a drink, but before we know it weeks have gone by and plans remain unmade. Life moves on.
But a little bit of effort can go a long way. And it’s an amazing feeling to meet up with a friend you haven’t seen for ages and find that you can pick up right where you left off.
A real friendship can survive a lot of things, even the pursuit of dreams that take your lives in different directions.

I agree. Over the past several years I’ve drifted apart, sometimes deliberately, because I have had a lot of changes and fresh starts in my life. It’s part of growth and progression.
