Every time I visit the library, I tell myself it’s only to drop off my returns, or have a quick browse through the stacks.
I tell myself that there isn’t much of interest in my local branch, and I’ve probably already read those books that are to my taste.
Yet I often come away with a stack of new novels that I know I’ll struggle to get through in the allotted three weeks.
But there’s something about wandering through the shelves, browsing until something catches my eye. It might be an interesting title, or a novel I meant to read a couple of years ago, but never got round to.
Whenever I spot one of those books, I get ridiculously excited and pick it up without another thought.
Another book by a writer I’ve enjoyed in the past? I’ll take that too.
Something with a thought-provoking blurb, or that I’ve heard great things about. Add it to the pile.
By the time I’ve finished circling the bookcases, my arms are usually stuffed with books.
On the way to the desk I’ll waver over one final novel that piques my interest. Realistically I know that I’ve got more than enough books to keep me going, yet I can’t resist the lure of an unexpectedly great read.
By the time I stagger to the desk, I couldn’t carry another book even if I wanted to.
Somehow I make it home and find a spot for my temporary collection.
Then more often than not, I find a book that I got from somewhere else, and I read that instead.
The online renewal service is my friend.

Is that your library? It’s a beaut!
It is NEVER a quick stop off is it? I get utterly absorbed at the library and end up with piles of books I probably never would have stuck into my Amazon basket. That and there’s just something good for the soul about hanging out with so many words. I like it.

Yes, it’s the main library in Middlesbrough – sadly not my local branch! The reading room is gorgeous too. I definitely go for things I wouldn’t buy, but that has led to some excellent discoveries. You’re right about it being good for the soul, I feel the same about bookshops!

This happens to me every time I go to the library too.
I have only recently rediscovered the library, and have been going to the big one in the centre of Liverpool, and I literally come away with a huge stack of books every time!

Ooh I’m jealous – I bet there are all kinds of lovely things in a big city library! Mine is only a local branch so fairly modest 🙂

It’s never a quick visit to the library for me either. The shortest time I’m there is usually a half-hour because I have to think about which books I need RIGHT NOW and which books can wait.

It takes me ages because I’m tempted to wander around and look at every…single…book!
