Writing can be hard enough without the endless distractions that come our way.
There’s always something demanding your attention and that something is usually easier, more fun or altogether more enticing.
In this high-energy, always connected world, we’re always looking for the next thing to entertain us, ideally the thing that requires minimum effort from our frazzled brains.
Here are just a few of the things capable of sucking away that writing time:
- The endless need to scroll through Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or Pinterest
- Your favourite TV shows on Netflix, or Netflix in general
- WhatsApp messages with friends about nothing in particular
- Online shopping (especially the ASOS sale)
- Pets who want to cuddle
- Loved ones who want to cuddle
- Loved ones who can’t find their keys or that t-shirt they think you moved but is actually in the wardrobe where they left it
- Cupcakes
- The latest book in your favourite series
- Looking aimlessly out of the window
- Self-doubt
- That amazing novel you wish you could have written, if only you were good enough
- The cleaning that you’ve been meaning to do for weeks but keep putting off
- Staring into space, with a little bit of drool coming out of your mouth
- The comfort of the sofa after a long day
So what’s distracting you today?
