If I’m honest, April hasn’t been the best month. Nothing particularly bad has happened, but I’ve been struggling a bit, feeling run down and tired, and ready for a break. It’s been hard to feel grateful at times; instead I’ve spent far more time than I should have feeling sorry for myself.
But writing these posts is a reason to take another look at the last few weeks and think about the good things that have happened, because some of them have been pretty special.
1. We got a puppy
Our sproodle puppy Dixie came into our lives at the start of the month, and she’s been causing havoc around the house ever since.
When she’s not leaping around chasing a plastic bottle or trying to jump on the sofa, she’s snoozing so sweetly on the rug, with her little legs jiggling like she’s running in her sleep.
I love her little cute face and the adorable squeaky noises she makes when she’s fussing around. We already can’t imagine life without her.*
2. Kingsley Chapman and the Murder
One of my favourite bands at the moment, I’ve seen these guys perform twice in the last month. Their brand of Gothic cabaret rock was made to be played live and I hope they gain a following outside the North East.
3. Longer nights and warm days
Spring arrived this month, albeit briefly, as it’s been snowing on and off for the last couple of days. But I have appreciated the light nights, especially with a dog who wants to be out in the garden at all hours.
And we did get a couple of beautiful warm days last week. I travelled over to Manchester for work and it was lovely to see people enjoying the sunshine in the city centre, going for drinks after work at the pavement cafes that had sprung up outside various restaurants and bars thanks to the warm weather.
4. Lasagne at The Bay Horse
The Bay Horse in the village of Great Broughton is one of my favourite places to enjoy a good meal, and we visit on a fairly regular basis. But it’s been a couple of months or so since we were last there; in fact it’s a while since husband and I went out for a meal together. We rectified that on Saturday with a pub lunch and naturally I had their lasagne, as it’s my absolute favourite dish: a proper hearty mountain of meat, pasta and cheese, with chunky chips and piles of veggies. There’s no tiny portion of pasta swimming in sauce here. Yum.
5. Retro movies with husband
This month we had a couple of great nights curled up on the sofa with the puppy, watching some of our old favourite cheesy movies from Sky On Demand. It’s ages since I’ve seen the first two Crocodile Dundee films, or True Lies, and I forgot how much I enjoy them.
And I can’t believe True Lies came out 22 years ago – it’s aged pretty well and I still find it really funny! I spent a good chunk of the film exclaiming, “I love this part!” as hubby laughed alongside me.
So that’s a few of the highlights from the last month. What have you enjoyed most about April?
*As I was in the middle of writing this little gushing note about her, my cute puppy just threw up on the rug at my feet. Not cool, not cool. But kind of reflects the last month…

I find myself in limbo this month. Waiting for the weather to improve (as I write this it’s snowing outside) and for events and other plans to come together.
