I’m starting to wonder if I should give this blog series a break, my reading has gone off a cliff the last few months!
And this month has been the worst so far, as I’ve only finished ONE book. Who actually am I?!
Having only got one book to discuss this month, it does put quite a lot of pressure on it to be good…
I started reading L.J. Ross’ DCI Ryan crime series over Christmas. Heavenfield is the third book in the self-published series, which is set in North East England.
Unlike many others in the crime genre, this series does build on the story of the previous books, rather than introducing a standalone mystery each time. After DCI Ryan broke up a murderous satanic circle on the island of Lindisfarne, he settled down with his history professor girlfriend. But the cult they thought was gone has secretly been manoeuvring and more deaths occur.
In Heavenfield, DCI Ryan must solve the murder of Anna’s mentor, as well as bring down his corrupt superior, who will do anything to get to him first.
I enjoyed this novel, like the others in the series it has a fast paced and salaciously dramatic story. It’s a bit overwritten at times, but that doesn’t detract from the narrative.
I’ll be keeping an eye out for book four in the series to see what’s next for DCI Ryan and his feisty partner.
In May, I did also half read two books: Black Water Rising by Attica Locke, which I don’t think I’ll finish, and Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch, which I’m enjoying so far.
May’s reads

I don’t get much time to read, I can usually grab 2-6 pages a day so it’s slow going.

I’ve been reading a few pages, but sometimes days go by before I pick the book up again!

For what it’s worth, I always enjoy hearing about what you’ve read, no matter how many or how little books it is! We all have slow months. My reading has slowed down a bit because of some work and life stuff (I’m moving soon, UGH). I’m sure you’ll manage to get back in the swing of things eventually!

Thanks Natalie, I appreciate it! I can’t believe how much I’ve slipped lately but I have some holidays coming up so hopefully I can squeeze in some extra reading.
