Summer hasn’t exactly hit the north of England full force yet; it’s the middle of June and the weather is mostly cold and damp.
But a few weeks back we had a gorgeous sunny Sunday morning, so we decided to take our puppy Dixie for her first trip to the beach.
South Gare is one of my favourite places on Teesside. Despite being in the shadow of the now defunct steelworks, and with a wind farm out to sea, for me it represents the area’s relationship between industry and rugged natural beauty.
It’s popular with dog walkers too, and Dixie absolutely loved bombing around the sand dunes, digging, and splashing around in the waves.
She’s not quite brave enough to go swimming yet, but she came home soaked and covered in sand, so I think she had a good time!
It’s a little strange to look back at these pictures now, as she’s grown so much in the three weeks or so since they were taken. She’s becoming a furry little monster, and we love her to bits!

I’d love to have access to a beach, I hate being in such a landlocked area. Looks like your dog loves it too.

She definitely does! We don’t go to the beach much, although it’s only up the road, but I do enjoy it

We normally go to Cayton Bay and Filey but we roam the whole East coast bit. In fact we’re going again in the 2nd week in July for the first time without Carrie, our lately-lamented daughter. I expect to do a lot of horizon gazing and collecting pebbles, building cairns and searching for sea glass. It will be strange but if we take my wife’s previous kids it might be okay. I love the coast – the sense of constant change – the idea of chance and renewal – I’ll even try to get the hang of Carrie’s flash camera and post a few on my facebook page.

Hope you enjoy your time by the sea Chris
