Lately I’ve realised that there’s no point in waiting for the universe to grant you something, you need to get out there and create opportunities for yourself.
I want to expand my life as a writer and get involved in community work, teaching and residencies. But it’s like starting a new career, without much of the relevant experience to go on my CV.
Applying for a new job or opportunity is hard if you don’t have the right experience. Chances are, there will be someone else who does and they’ll probably get the opportunity over you. So how can you get experience if no one will give it to you?
Think about whether there’s something you can do for yourself. Can you volunteer, or start your own project, or even your own business?
A lot of people become successful by identifying a gap in the market and deciding to fill it. They may only do it initially as a way of gaining experience or helping people on a smaller scale, but it grows from there.
People often say if you can’t find the book you want to read, you should write it. Have the confidence in your own voice and your own perspective to take control.
You don’t have to wait for someone else to give you permission.
Want to join a writers’ group but there isn’t one in your area? Start one.
Want to read a book with a story similar to yours, but can’t find one anywhere? Write it.
Looking for a training course to help you achieve that dream but nothing fits right? Develop it.
Chances are, if you’re looking for something, then someone else is too. If you do your research and prepare, maybe you can help them. They might become the first client for your new business.
Taking the initiative feels a lot better than sitting back and waiting for someone else to give you an opportunity. Not only will it improve your experience, but it’ll improve your confidence too. Because your voice matters and you have the power to use it.
