It sits on the hill looking out across the city, over the River Danube, towards Austria and even Hungary, on a clear day.
The castle hill has been occupied for thousands of years and there has been a fortification of some sort on the site since around 500AD.
Bratislava Castle (Hrad) has a chequered history, having been attacked and severely damaged on several occasions, most recently in 1811 when a fire gutted the building. It wasn’t until 1957 when the castle was restored.
Today it’s a striking structure surrounded by beautiful gardens, which offer a lovely view across Bratislava and into the country beyond.
It also houses the Museum of History, where visitors can learn about society in Slovakia from the middle ages up to the present day.
